FINE ART SOCIETY COMMUNITY GRANT  £250
Brick by Brick, 7th January - 20th February 2023

The Arts Society North Devon awarded the Burton Art Gallery and Museum a Community Grant of £250 to go towards engagement activities for Brick By Brick, an exhibition of art created or inspired by LEGO.

Such a family friendly exhibition lends itself to plenty of activities for both children and adults.  We set up a programme of events with Nick Lockett-Clarke, a Lego Engineer who runs Stemgineering...a small business using LEGO in order to educate key STEM subjects to children.  He ran six workshops at the Burton Art Gallery during the course of the exhibition:

  • LEGO Lab: A free drop in session for children of all ages to play with LEGO witht guidance on building.
  • LEGO Stop Motion (x3): These were so popular we ran three workshops!  For children aged 8 - 13 to learn how to bring their stories to life using stop motion and LEGO.
  • LEGO Bridge Building: A workshop for 8 - 13 year olds to learn engineering skills through LEGO.
  • Adults vs Kids: A fun LEGO challenge event which pitched children against their grown ups with LEGO building skills.

These activities attracted over 150 children to the Burton Art Gallery to learn new skills and engage with creativity.  The funding from the Arts Society allowed the cost of the workshops to be subsidised so that we could run them at affordable prices, an important consideration in a time when the Cost of Living was at its height.

Brick by Brick was the most popular exhibition we have had at the Burton for many years, and it was great to see so many children and young people in the gallery enjoying the artworks and getting involved in various activities.  Many thanks to the Arts Society for continuing to support our work with this age group.
